How To Be An Ally

One of the most important things we can do, in our everyday lives, is be a committed and reliable ally.  This is especially important in support of marginalized communities like people of color, LGBTQIA folks, immigrants, religious minorities, and people with disabilities.  It’s important for us each to recognize where we have been afforded unearned privilege – it might be our race/ethnicity, our class, our gender identity, our sexual orientation, etc. – and, wherever possible, seek to support those who are experiencing discrimination, bias, and oppression.  (Curious to explore which privileges you might or might not have?  Consider filling out this checklist from Buzzfeed.  Content warning: please note that they do describe some pretty tough scenarios of oppression and discrimination.)
